Senate Bill 1140 by Sen. Greg Treat (R-OKC) is expected to be voted on by the full Senate on Monday or Tuesday. It is critical we contact our state senators urging them to vote ‘yes’.
The bill provides specific protections from future state regulations that may force faith-based adoption agencies to violate their religious mission.
A similar law has passed in the states of Virginia, Texas, North and South Dakota, and Michigan which were written to prevent the forced closure of agencies like those in Massachusetts, Illinois, California and elsewhere after state regulations mandated compliance with practices that violate core beliefs.
The bill specifically protects private child-placement agencies from being forced to “participate in any placement of a child for foster care or adoption when the proposed placement would violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions or policies.”
Opponents of the bill are mounting an aggressive campaign of misinformation arguing that the bill ‘codifies discrimination against the LGBT community’.
