Adoption Agency Protection Bill Modeled After Virginia Law

Sen. Greg Treat (R-OKC) filed a bill this week designed to offer legal protection for private adoption agencies.

The bill provides specific protections from future state regulations that may force faith-based agencies to violate their mission.

A similar bill recently passed in the state of Virginia, which was written to prevent the forced closure of agencies like those in Massachusetts and elsewhere after state regulations mandated compliance with practices that violate core beliefs.

The bill, SB1140, specifically protects private child-placement agencies from being forced to “participate in any placement of a child for foster care or adoption when the proposed placement would violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions or policies.”
