Gov. Kevin Stitt on Thursday announced new restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
In a news conference at the state Capitol, Stitt detailed new limits on public gatherings and indoor sporting events.
Public gatherings, including weddings, funerals and holiday parties at event centers, will be limited to 50% capacity. Churches will be exempt from the new restrictions, Stitt said.
Local health departments will also be able to grant exemptions for specific events.
A preacher’s son who recently called for a day of prayer and fasting for those affected by COVID-19, Stitt cited the First Amendment in his defense of exempting churches from the new restrictions.
