Julius Jones’ attorneys push back on Oklahoma AG’s request for execution date

Attorneys for a prominent death row inmate are pushing back on the Oklahoma attorney general’s request that an execution date be set for Oct. 28.

Julius Jones’ legal team filed a motion Friday asking the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to disregard the request from Attorney General John O’Connor, who asked this week that execution dates be set for seven death row inmates.

Jones’ attorneys note that their client is scheduled to have his second commutation hearing before the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board on Sept. 13. If the board recommends commuting Jones’ sentence, Gov. Kevin Stitt will then get the final say in the case.
