Opinion: Disruption in higher ed could position state to lead

We all know there is an elephant in the college classroom. Those outside the castle walls of higher education will analyze it, but can those protected by the ivory tower be ready to engage in this difficult conversation?

The value of higher education has been under tremendous scrutiny over the past decade, only to be further intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Watching public and private universities shut down for a significant part of 2020, and continue to charge large amounts for tuition, highlights the broken business of higher education.

At the same time, student debt is out of control, employment rates for college graduates are questionable, and significant workforce shortages escalate as universities continue to exclude and not admit qualified students in the most needed workforce areas.
