A public school teacher and organization director is Gov. Kevin Stitt’s pick for his next secretary of education.
The governor tapped Ryan Walters, CEO of Every Kid Counts Oklahoma, for the cabinet position, which requires confirmation from the state Senate.
The 2016 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year finalist taught for eight years in his hometown at McAlester High School, covering history and government. He currently teaches an online Advanced Placement history course at Millwood High School and McAlester High School through the new Oklahoma Supplemental Online Course Program.
Walters is the former executive director of Oklahoma Achieves, an education initiative from the State Chamber of Oklahoma. He now leads Every Kid Counts Oklahoma, which is distributing $8 million of Stitt’s federal coronavirus aid funds dedicated to education grants.
